Leddy goal

The Islanders avenged a December 5th loss to the Ottawa Senators last night with a solid 5-2 victory in Ottawa. In his first game back from a lower body injury, Travis Hamonic scored the game winning goal in the third and had a helper on John Tavares’s insurance goal later in the period.

Coach Jack Capuano was quoted on the Islanders’ website.“He [Hamonic] had a great night tonight. I’m going to ride him. I don’t know how many minutes he played, but I’m going to play him in all key situations. He’s one of our best defensemen since I’ve been around. I was pretty pleased with those guys on the back end.”

Hamonic wasn’t the only member from the Islanders’ defensive unit that contributed on the score sheet. Nick Leddy scored the Islanders’ first goal early in the first period just 19 seconds into their first power play. It was Leddy’s third goal of the season and month.

After three tough losses this month to the Penguins, Capitals and Flyers the Islanders have improved to 4-3-1 in January. The Rangers victory last night keeps the Islanders in third place in the Metropolitan Division.
